The best travel credit card to carry with you as you collect stamps in your passport is none other than the Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite Card itself.

This card is packed with competitive rewards, specifically strong points per dollar spent at partnered grocers like Sobeys, Safeway, IGA, Foodland and more, plus solid Scene+ points per dollar spent on purchases made at other grocery stores, dining, eligible entertainment, and transit. To top it all off, you can also pocket bonus Scene+ points on every dollar you spend on hotel bookings, car rentals, and arrangements made through Scene+ Travel, powered by Expedia.

To support this rewards program, cardholders are also protected by comprehensive travel insurance, including valuable categories like trip interruption and trip cancellation insurance, hotel burglary insurance, and emergency medical over 65 insurance.

The combined benefits are also boast-worthy, led by the rare no foreign transaction fees perk (which allows you to avoid the 2.5% fee that comes with shopping internationally), followed by concierge services, a handful of airport lounge complimentary access through Dragon Pass, plus an Avis Preferred Plus membership for expedited and exclusive rental car services.

While there are other travel contenders that may have more insurance, point-potential, and a lower annual fee and income requirements (particularly the Scotiabank Gold American Express Card), the Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite Card has the upper hand simply by coming from the Visa network rather than American Express. Visa cards are more widely-accepted internationally, whereas Amex cards aren't as commonly accepted as payment in certain places within Asia and Europe, limiting its usefulness during travel – which is precisely what we're trying to optimize.

In conclusion, the Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite Card takes first place as best overall travel credit card because it's extremely well-balanced, widely-accepted, and pleasantly upscale.

It should come as no shock that the American Express Cobalt Card is the leading card in this category. After all, this card is considered to be the best credit card in Canada.

Why? Well, for starters, cardholders can earn heaps of points on common everyday spend categories like dining, groceries, food delivery services, streaming, gas, and transit. These points come in the form of American Express Membership Rewards, which have some of the highest redemption values towards travel categories via transfers to airline partners, a fixed point travel program, and transfers to hotel partners.

If you happen to travel with Air Canada, then it’s worth mentioning that the Cobalt Card’s American Express Membership Rewards points can be transferred at a 1:1 ratio to Aeroplan – making it a top competitor against Aeroplan branded credit cards.

Aside from the card’s remarkable rewards program, the American Express Cobalt Card also provides some important travel protections like flight and baggage delay, travel accident, and car rental damage and theft insurance.

On top of Amex Experiences, a standard benefit on most American Express credit cards, the Cobalt Card also features a travel credit when you book two or more consecutive nights at participating properties through The Hotel Collection with American Express Travel, applicable towards property amenities or complimentary room upgrades when available.

Ultimately, the American Express Cobalt Card earns its place at the top for collecting travel-redeemable points because it gives cardholders the opportunity to earn plenty of these points on popular spend categories like gas, groceries, dining, and transit, which can later be best redeemed towards travel via transferring them to the Airline Partners and booking flights. Pair that with decent travel coverage and a helpful travel credit, and it’s easy to see why this card is a top travel contender.

The Scotiabank Gold American Express® Card is one of our favorite cards. It has a very solid rewards program, earning one of the highest rewards among all credit cards in Canada. In addition, it offers comprehensive travel benefits, including the rare and valuable no foreign transaction fee benefit, making it a great and balanced credit card in terms of both rewards and benefits. The Scotiabank Gold American Express Card has a slightly lower annual cost than the Cobalt Card, but it does come with some low income requirements (whereas the Cobalt Cards avoids income requirements altogether).

This card offers up the opportunity to earn more Scene+ points on groceries if you happen to shop at partnered grocers like Sobeys, Freshco, and Foodland. When it comes to dining, both the Scotiabank Gold American Express Card and the Cobalt Card allow you to earn the same amount of points through their respective loyalty programs, the same goes for streaming. That said, the Scotiabank Gold American Express Card earns you more Scene+ points on gas and transit, plus the card adds a couple more earn categories like entertainment and travel – an important feature the Cobalt Card lacks. Still, American Express Membership Reward points tend to be more valuable when redeemed towards travel (as opposed to Scene+ points).

The Scotiabank Gold American Express Card also features more travel insurance, adding emergency medical over 65, and trip interruption and trip cancellation insurance to the mix. Some shared categories, like hotel burglary insurance, travel accident insurance, and emergency out of province medical insurance also offer more coverage through the Scotiabank Gold American Express Card.

While the two Amex cards share Amex Experiences, the Scotiabank Gold American Express Card goes on to add benefits like no foreign transaction fees, concierge services, and a Priority Pass membership discount. Alternatively, the Cobalt Card also adds its hotel-oriented travel credit.

Therefore, if you’re looking for more earn categories (including one that caters specifically to travel), better coverage, and slightly more travel-oriented perks, then the Scotiabank Gold American Express Card might be a better travel contender for you over the Cobalt Card. Otherwise, if you want points with higher travel redemption value and to avoid income requirements altogether, then stick to the Cobalt Card.

For the same annual fee, but much higher annual income requirements, you can always opt for the MBNA Rewards World Elite Mastercard instead.

Compared to the Scotiabank Gold American Express Card, the rewards program is a little more condensed, offering similar rates of MBNA Rewards points on dining and groceries. That said, your grocery purchases can be further optimized with the Scotiabank Gold American Express Card if you shop at partnered retailers. While the Scotiabank Gold American Express Card goes on to add multiple earn categories like entertainment, gas, transit, streaming, and travel, the MBNA Rewards World Elite Mastercard simply includes the same high earn rates on digital media, membership, and household utility purchases. Both reward programs offer a similar redemption value when it comes to travel, so which card will earn you more travel-focused points really comes down to which purchases you prefer and tend to optimize the most.

As for extensive insurance categories, the Scotiabank Gold American Express Card takes the lead with its inclusion of categories like hotel burglary insurance, emergency medical over 65 insurance, and trip interruption and trip cancellation insurance.

When it comes to benefits, the MBNA Rewards World Elite Mastercard is actually more extensive, with perks like concierge services, car rental discounts at Avis and Budget Rent A Car, trip and legal assistance when abroad, an annual birthday bonus of extra points each year, and rare price protection – which allows you to price match items you recently bought when a lower price is implemented soon after.

All in all, the Scotiabank Gold American Express Card offers cardholders more earn categories to collect points that can later be redeemed towards travel and more travel coverage for much lower income requirements. However, if you happen to be a high-earner looking to optimize digital media, membership, and household utility purchases alongside your dining and grocery expenses, plus you want more travel perks like rare price protection coverage, then the MBNA Rewards World Elite Mastercard is a solid travel option.

Back from the best overall category, the Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite Card is a top contender for no foreign transactions fees.

As previously stated, this card earns you tons of Scene+ points for every dollar spent at partnered grocers like Sobeys, Safeway, Freshco, Foodland and more, followed by plenty of points per dollar spent on other groceries, dining, entertainment, and transit. The first-year annual fee waiver is the cherry on top, providing even greater value to cardholders.

Best Foreign Exchange Credit Card in 2025

Pros

  • No foreign transaction fee saves you 2.5% on all non-CAD purchases.
  • Rewards cover all high-spending categories, including food, groceries, entertainment, and gas.
  • Comprehensive coverage of all travel insurance.

Cons

  • The card network is American Express, which might not be widely accepted in some countries, making it a bit harder to use the no foreign transaction fee benefit.
  • Having a lounge pass would have made this card even more perfect, but there is access to a discount code for lounge access pass purchases.

As mentioned in the previous category, on top of its extensive high-earning rewards program and its comprehensive travel coverage, the Scotiabank Gold American Express Card stands out as well for its no foreign transactions fees benefit.

When compared to the Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite Card, this option costs slightly less annually and comes with lower income requirements.

Like the Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite Card, the Scotiabank Gold American Express Card earns cardholders Scene+ points on similar spend categories. In fact, with the Scotiabank Gold American Express Card, you’ll earn more points at partnered grocers, plus more points at other eligible grocery stores, restaurants, and on entertainment and transit options, but you’ll still get the same amount of bonus points on every dollar you spend on hotel bookings, car rentals, and arrangements made through Scene+ Travel by Expedia.

Both cards provide nearly the same amount of insurance categories, but the Scotiabank Gold American Express Card adds mobile device insurance. Still, a couple of shared categories have better coverage through the Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite Card, specifically emergency out of province medical insurance and emergency medical over 65 insurance.

The benefits list on this card isn’t very long, but it consists of some sought-after perks like a discount on a Priority Pass membership (for airport lounge accommodations), concierge services (to help you book your itineraries), and most importantly, no foreign transaction fees (which allows you to avoid the 2.5% fee that can come with shopping internationally). Overall, the Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite Card has more extensive and exclusive additions like some complementary airport lounge visits through the Dragon Pass, plus a status lift to an Avis Preferred Plus membership.

As you can see then, the Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite Card might be the better no foreign transaction fees travel card if you meet its higher income requirements and want more benefits alongside no foreign transaction fees, plus some better coverage in a couple of insurance categories. Some cardholders may even consider the Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite Card to be more widely accepted than the Scotiabank Gold American Express Card, since American Express Cards are less accepted as a form of payment in certain places within Europe, Asia, and through some small-scale retailers. On the other hand, the Scotiabank Gold American Express Card is more affordable, accessible, and has a better rewards program to complement perks like no foreign transaction fees.

Another Scotiabank credit card that boasts no foreign transaction fees is the Scotiabank Platinum American Express Card.

While the income requirements on this card are similar to those of the Scotiabank Gold American Express Card, the annual fee is substantially higher, even higher than the Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite Card. Let’s break down why that is…

You wouldn’t necessarily understand the price jump by the rewards program alone, since it’s the least extensive of the three cards in this section, offering a flat-rate of Scene+ points for every dollar spent on all eligible purchases, plus the same bonus points on hotel bookings, car rentals, and arrangement made with Scene+ Travel.

Because of the Scotiabank Platinum American Express Card’s addition of mobile device coverage, its insurance is slightly more extensive and in some cases more comprehensive than the Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite Card, but it offers the same categories as the Scotiabank Gold American Express Card. However, in this case as well, certain categories are also more comprehensive by comparison (like trip interruption and trip cancellation insurance, flight delay insurance, and emergency medical insurances).

It becomes most clear why the Scotiabank Platinum American Express is pricier than its no-foreign-transaction-fee competitors when you compare benefits. On top of no foreign transaction fees and concierge services, the Scotiabank Platinum American Express Card adds a Hertz #1 Gold Club Member status lift, a discount on a Priority Pass Membership, plus a ton of complimentary visits in combination with Plaza Premium lounges. Airport lounge access alone is enough to boost a card to premium pricing.

So, if you’re looking for a no-foreign-transaction-fee card with luxury add-ons like complimentary airport lounge access and more travel perks in general, plus more comprehensive travel insurance, then the Scotiabank Platinum American Express Card could be your go-to. However, if you want to avoid the lower acceptance rates of Amex, and have more earning opportunities with Scene+, you might want to stick to the Scotiabank Passport American Express Card.

If you're a frequent traveler, the Platinum card is an excellent choice. It's highly recommended for its extensive travel benefits, including unlimited lounge access for you and a guest at the American Express Lounge collection, making it the best card for lounge access in Canada. The card also offers unique perks not commonly found with other Canadian cards, such as status upgrades at Marriott Bonvoy and Hilton, dining and travel credits, concierge service, airport benefits, Nexus application reimbursement, and more. These benefits can more than offset the annual fee. However, if you don't travel often or are mainly looking for a card that maximizes rewards, this card may not be the best option for you.

Pros

  • Offers more perks than any other credit card in Canada, catering to premium users who value extensive benefits.
  • Enjoy $400 in annual travel and dining credits, which can offset some of the card's cost.
  • Gain unlimited access to over 1,400 airport lounges worldwide, enhancing your travel experience.
  • Multiple options for redeeming points for high value, giving you flexibility in how you use your rewards.
  • Includes 11 types of insurance coverage, offering comprehensive protection for cardholders.

Cons

  • As with other American Express cards, it may have lower acceptance in some locations compared to other networks.
  • The high annual fee of $799 may be a barrier for some users, especially those who do not fully utilize the card's benefits.
  • Some benefits are limited to specific airports and hotels.

Rewards*

  • 2x points per $1 spent on eligible dining & food delivery purchases (restaurant, fast food, coffee shop, food delivery)
  • 2x points per $1 spent on eligible travel purchases (flights, hotels, tours and more)

**Terms and conditions apply. This Charge Card requires full payment of the Due in Full balance each month, with a 30% interest rate on late payments. If you’re looking for the most premium perks packed inside of a credit card, consider the American Express Platinum Card.

For travel benefits, with the American Express Platinum Card, the opportunities are endless. To start, indulge in unlimited complimentary access to the American Express Global Lounge Collection – complete with over 1,400 lounges globally. You can also take advantage of an annual travel credit applicable towards flights, hotel stays, rental cars, and vacation bookings. Need more? Get updated to Hilton Honors Gold Status, or Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite Status to make your hotel stays even more upscale. The list goes on with Priority Travel perks at Pearson airport, a Nexus Program rebate, trip and legal assistance, and concierge services.

As you’ve probably gathered, the American Express Platinum Card is a perks-oriented premium travel card, so the rewards program isn’t exactly its selling point. Still, cardholders earn decent points per dollar spent on eligible dining, food delivery, and travel purchases.

To back-up the benefits, this top-tier card’s coverage is also pretty extensive, offering valuable insurance inclusions like trip interruption and trip cancellation insurance, flight and baggage delay insurance, and car rental damage and theft insurance.

While there are no income requirements on this card, there is an extremely high annual cost – but this cost can be offset if you intend on taking full advantage of all the perks provided.

Thus, if you’re leaning towards a travel card stacked with luxury perks, the best option is the American Express Platinum Card with tons of premium travel-oriented benefits – especially the unlimited airport lounge access.

You can substantially lower your Amex premium travel credit card’s annual cost by opting for a card like the American Express Gold Rewards Card instead. Just keep in mind that when you cut down in cost, you also cut down in perks.

The American Express Gold Rewards Card shares benefits like an annual travel credit (although lower in value), a Nexus Program rebate (although also lower in value), complimentary American Express Travel hotel benefits, extra points on Amex Travel Online purchases and American Express offers, and Amex Experiences as the American Express Platinum Card. Beyond that, the American Express Gold Rewards Card adds a Hertz Gold Plus Rewards status lift, plus a Priority Pass membership with complimentary visits through Plaza Premium lounges. Still, the American Express Platinum Card features way more benefits and better perks in cases like airport lounge access since the complimentary visits are both unlimited and applicable to a larger network of lounges.

The rewards program on the American Express Gold Rewards Card is similarly simple as well, with decent points per dollar spent on gas, groceries, travel, and drugstore purchases. Compared to the American Express Platinum Card, the rate of American Express Membership Rewards points you’ll receive on shared earn categories like travel are the same, but where the American Express Gold Rewards Card optimizes gas, groceries, and drugstore purchases, the American Express Platinum Card optimizes dining. So, deciding which is best in terms of rewards might come down to whether you want to earn points on popular everyday spend categories (like gas and groceries) and travel, or more expensive spend categories (like dining) and travel.

Both luxury cards offer the same insurance categories, but the American Express Platinum Card has better coverage in most shared categories.

Overall, if you want to spend more annually for more travel perks and better insurance coverage, then you may want to keep your eye on the American Express Platinum Card. Otherwise, the American Express Gold Rewards Card is a great luxury alternative for a lower annual fee, uncomplicated points on everyday spend categories, and still some complimentary airport lounge access.

If you are a frequent Air Canada traveler, having an Aeroplan card for perks like free checked bags and priority service can be very beneficial. Many financial institutions offer Aeroplan cards, but I don't believe the American Express version is the best one. Opting for another option might be better. However, the Amex card does have a very large sign-up bonus, making it a great choice for those specifically seeking that.

Pros

  • Generous rewards rate with up to 3 Aeroplan points per $1 spent on purchases, particularly beneficial for frequent flyers.
  • Enjoy free checked bags when flying with Air Canada, reducing travel costs.
  • Access to preferred pricing on Aeroplan flight awards, maximizing the value of your points.
  • Unlimited access to Maple Leaf lounges when flying with Air Canada, providing a more comfortable travel experience.
  • Extensive insurance coverage, including 11 types of insurance, offering peace of mind during your travels.

Cons

  • As an American Express card, it may have limited acceptance compared to other credit cards, potentially limiting its use in some places.
  • The most valuable rewards are generally tied to Air Canada flights, which may not appeal to travelers who fly with other airlines.
  • The card comes with a high annual fee of $599, which may be a consideration for budget-conscious users.
  • The unlimited lounge access is limited to Maple Leaf Lounges and Air Canada Cafe lounges which don't have a great worldwide coverage.

Rewards*

  • 3x Aeroplan® points per $1 spent on eligible Air Canada® and Air Canada Vacations® purchases
  • 2x Aeroplan® points per $1 spent on eligible dining & food delivery purchases
  • 1.25x Aeroplan® points per $1 spent on all other purchases

If you can afford to up the annual fee and you tend to travel with Air Canada, then the American Express Aeroplan Reserve Card is a great luxury travel credit card contender.

Compared to the American Express Gold Rewards Card, the American Express Aeroplan Reserve Card earns you more travel-oriented Air Canada Aeroplan points – but specifically on eligible Air Canada and Air Canada Vacations purchases. Instead of gas, groceries, and drugstore purchases, with the American Express Aeroplan Reserve Card, you’ll earn decent points on dining and food delivery purchases. The overall base rate on the American Express Aeroplan Reserve Card is also higher than the base rate of American Express Membership Rewards points through the American Express Gold Rewards Card.

As far as travel redemptions go, both cards offer the same point values towards travel with either airline partners (for the American Express Gold Rewards Card) or Aeroplan flights (for the American Express Aeroplan Reserve Card). All things considered, the American Express Gold Rewards Card might offer a bit more partner airline flexibility.

The insurance categories between these two cards are also the same, but overall, the American Express Aeroplan Reserve Card has better coverage across most categories – which is to be expected given its higher annual fee.

Likewise, the American Express Aeroplan Reserve Card has more travel benefits, with tons of status lifts, extra Aeroplan point opportunities, Priority Travel perks, free first checked bags, an annual companion voucher, free extra nights at hotels for every 3-night stay, a Priority Pass membership, a Nexus Program rebate, and unlimited complimentary access for cardholders and a guest to Maple Leaf lounges and AirCanada Cafes. As you can see, the perks on the American Express Aeroplan Reserve Card are much more substantial and extensive when compared to the American Express Gold Rewards Card – with better opportunities like more complimentary airport lounge access.

In conclusion, if you’re a high-spending frequent Air Canada traveller, the most premium option for you is the American Express Aeroplan Reserve Card with its Air-Canada-oriented rewards program, comprehensive travel coverage, and extensive and exclusive benefits. Alternatively, if you don’t want to commit fully to Air Canada and you want to spend less annually, the American Express Gold Rewards Card is still a luxurious option.

Maybe Scene+ is your rewards program of choice. If so, consider the Scotiabank Platinum American Express Card once more.

In addition to a flat-rate rewards program that also offers bonus points on Scene+ Travel, you’ll also receive that Hertz #1 Club Gold Member status lift, no foreign transaction fees, concierge services, a discount on a Priority Pass membership, plus tons of complimentary visits provided by both Priority Pass and Plaza Premium lounges (which of course isn’t unlimited like the lounge access provided by the American Express Aeroplan Reserve Card, but still nonetheless impressive for the annual price).

Surprisingly, the Scotiabank Platinum American Express Card also has better insurance coverage when it comes to categories like trip interruption and trip cancellation insurance. This card also adds a couple more coverage categories, specifically mobile device insurance and emergency medical over 65 insurance.

Sure, the Scotiabank Platinum American Express Card comes with some income requirements, but these are very minimal.

At the end of the day, if you’re not totally committed to Air Canada or an extremely high annual cost, the Scotiabank Platinum American Express Card is yet another more flexible premium option with more travel coverage than the American Express Aeroplan Reserve Card.

The RBC Avion Visa Infinite Privilege is an excellent choice for frequent travelers who want premium travel perks and high-value rewards. The welcome bonus, insurance coverage, and airport benefits offer significant value for those who qualify. • Extensive insurance coverage including emergency medical, trip cancellation, and mobile device insurance.
  • Access to airport perks, including fast-track security and lounge access.
  • Flexible rewards that can be transferred to airline partners like British Airways and Cathay Pacific.

Cons

  • High annual fee of $399.
  • Requires a high personal or household income of $200,000 to qualify.
  • Only 1.25 points per $1 spent on all purchases, which is lower compared to other premium cards.
  • Limited redemption value outside of the Air Travel Redemption chart.

Additional cardholders(s) (co-applicant and authorized user(s)) on the RBC Avion Visa Infinite Privilege credit card account, as well as existing cardholders on any RBC Royal Bank personal credit card account transferring to an RBC Avion Visa Infinite Privilege credit card account during the Offer Period, are not eligible for the offer. For the same annual fee as the Scotiabank Platinum American Express Card, you can also opt for the RBC Avion Visa Infinite Privilege Card. Except, bear in mind that this option has very high income requirements and is intended for especially high earners.

The RBC Avion Visa Infinite Privilege Card also sports a flat-rate rewards program. Unlike the Scotiabank Platinum American Express Card though, there’s no bonus travel earn category, which is a bit of a bummer.

Nevertheless, when you transfer your RBC Avion points towards participating airline partners, your points are worth even more towards travel than they would be with the Scotiabank Platinum American Express Card.

Regarding coverage, both cards offer the same insurance categories and coverage amounts per category are pretty similar.

Now on to benefits, while the Scotiabank Platinum American Express Card focuses more on perks like no foreign transaction fees, a discount on Priority Pass and Plaza Premium lounge access, the RBC Avion Visa Infinite Privilege Card includes gas discounts and more Petro-Points and Avion points at Petro Canada, Priority Travel perks at select Canadian airports, and a Dragon Pass airport lounge membership with some complimentary visits – although not as many as the Scotiabank Platinum American Express Card through the Priority Pass.

Therefore, the RBC Avion Visa Infinite Privilege Card is a good option if you’re a high-earner looking for an uncomplicated premium travel card that offers high-value points towards airline partners and helpful travel perks and coverage. Since it’s not an Amex credit card, it also might be more widely accepted around the world. However, if you don’t meet the RBC Avion Visa Infinite Privilege Card’s high income requirements and you want a travel optimization earning opportunity, no foreign transaction fees, or more complimentary airport lounge visits, then the Scotiabank Platinum American Express Card is still superior.

The CIBC Aeroplan Visa Infinite Privilege Card is ideal for frequent Air Canada flyers who want to maximize their Aeroplan points and enjoy premium travel perks. With 2 points per $1 spent on Air Canada purchases and free checked baggage on every flight, this card offers significant value for those who travel often. Additionally, the extensive travel insurance and unlimited Maple Leaf lounge access make it a solid choice for high-income individuals looking for convenience and protection during their travels. However, the high annual fee and income requirements mean it's best suited for those who can take full advantage of its Air Canada-specific benefits.

Pros

  • Earn up to 2 points per $1 on Air Canada purchases, and 1.5 points per $1 on gas, groceries, dining, and travel.
  • Air Canada perks: Includes free checked bags, priority check-in, boarding, and Maple Leaf lounge access.
  • Unlimited lounge access: Enjoy unlimited Maple Leaf lounge visits when flying Air Canada.
  • Comprehensive insurance: Offers extensive travel and purchase protection, including trip cancellation and mobile device insurance.

Cons

  • High annual fee: The card has a steep $599 annual fee.
  • Strict income requirements: Requires a personal income of $150,000 or household income of $200,000 to qualify.
  • Limited reward value: Best value is achieved only when redeeming for Air Canada flights, making it less versatile for non-Air Canada redemptions.

Rewards

  • 2 Aeroplan® points per $1 spent on Air Canada and Air Canada Vacations if they are in the first $100k transactions of the year
  • 1.5 Aeroplan® points per $1 spent on gas, groceries, travel and dining if they are in the first $100k transactions of the year

Back to Air Canada luxury, the CIBC Aeroplan Visa Infinite Privilege Card is more expensive annually than the RBC Avion Visa Infinite Privilege Card, but you can receive it with a slightly lower personal annual income.

Unlike the RBC Avion Visa Infinite Privilege Card, the CIBC Aeroplan Visa Infinite Privilege Card’s rewards program is more complex, offering cardholders Aeroplan points per dollar spent on Air Canada Vacations, gas, groceries, travel, and dining rather than a simple flat rate. The base rate on the CIBC Aeroplan Visa Infinite Privilege Card is also the same as the RBC Avion Visa Infinite Privilege Card’s flat rate on all eligible purchases.

When you redeem your Aeroplan points towards Aeroplan flights, they’re also worth more than redeeming RBC Avion points towards airline partner transfers. The general travel redemption category for Aeroplan points also offers more point value than the general travel redemption category for RBC Avion points.

Overall, the insurance between the two cards is similar, give or take some coverage in a couple of shared categories.

As for benefits, both cards comes with Visa Infinite Exclusive Benefits, gas discounts, and Priority Travel perks, but the CIBC Aeroplan Visa Infinite Privilege Card goes on to add more perks than the RBC Avion Visa Infinite Privilege Card like car rental discounts at Avis and Budget locations, an annual companion voucher, an expedited chance at reaching Aeroplan Elite Status, a complimentary upgrade to Avis President’s club, free first checked bags for cardholders and up to 8 travel companions when flying with Air Canada, plus complimentary access to select Maple Leaf Lounges each year.

In summary, the CIBC Aeroplan Visa Infinite Privilege Card is a great premium travel option if you can afford the high annual cost. This cost accounts for more earn categories, higher point values, and more travel perks – but you will want to make sure you're a loyal Air Canada traveller to reap all of the benefits. Otherwise, cards like the RBC Avion Visa Infinite Privilege Card have a lower cost, more flexible travel redemptions, and still some premium perks – as long as you meet some high income requirements.

For a slightly lower annual fee and similar income requirements, the BMO eclipse Visa Infinite Privilege Card is yet another luxury travel credit card contender.

Unlike most premium cards we’ve seen thus far, the BMO eclipse Visa Infinite Privilege Card offers a strong rewards program, earning cardholders tons of points on popular everyday earn categories like groceries, gas, drugstore purchases, and travel-related purchases. That's plenty more points on travel, gas, groceries, and dining than we’ve seen with the CIBC Aeroplan Visa Infinite Privilege Card. Keep in mind, however, that the BMO eclipse Visa Infinite Privilege Card’s earn categories come with point caps. When these caps are met, cardholders become subject to a standard base rate, one that’s slightly lower than the base rate on the CIBC Aeroplan Visa Infinite Privilege Card.

When redeeming your BMO Rewards, you’ll also want to note that BMO Rewards, while more flexible than Air Canada Aeroplan points, are less valuable when redeemed towards travel.

The two cards offer similar insurance coverages, but when it comes to benefits, the CIBC Aeroplan Visa Infinite Privilege Card is slightly more perk-heavy. Still, the BMO eclipse Visa Infinite Privilege Card comes with Dragon Pass privileges through a Visa Airport Companion membership and some complimentary visits to participating lounges. Not to mention its own Priority Travel perks at select Canadian airports, and a unique anniversary lifestyle credit that can be used towards any expense, including travel.

Overall, if you don’t want to be tied down to travelling with Air Canada, you want more point-potential, and a unique and valuable anniversary credit to apply towards your next trip, alongside Dragon Pass airport lounge access, then the BMO eclipse Visa Infinite Privilege Card is worth applying for. Otherwise, you can get more perks and more valuable travel-redeemable points with the CIBC Aeroplan Visa Infinite Privilege Card – for a higher annual cost and an Air Canada commitment of course.

The CIBC Aventura Visa Infinite Privilege Card offers a well-rounded suite of travel benefits, making it ideal for frequent travelers. The annual $200 travel credit, complimentary lounge access, and comprehensive insurance package ensure you’re covered for both convenience and protection. Plus, the ability to earn up to 3 points per dollar spent and redeem them at high values for flights makes this card an excellent choice for those who value travel rewards. However, it comes with a high annual fee and income requirements, so it's best suited for those who can fully take advantage of its perks.

Pros

  • Generous rewards: Earn up to 3 points per $1 spent on travel and 2 points per $1 on gas, groceries, restaurants, and more.
  • Valuable travel perks: Includes an annual $200 travel credit, 6 complimentary airport lounge passes, and discounts at Avis and Budget car rentals.
  • High point value: Points are worth up to 2.29 cents each when redeemed for flights.
  • Comprehensive insurance: Offers 12 types of insurance, including mobile device protection and emergency medical coverage.

Cons

  • High annual fee: A $499 annual fee makes this a more expensive option.
  • Strict income requirements: Requires a personal income of $150,000 or household income of $200,000 to qualify.

Rewards

  • 3 points per $1 spent on travel purchased through the CIBC Rewards Center

The CIBC Aventura Visa Infinite Privilege Card has the same annual fee and income requirements as the BMO eclipse Visa Infinite Privilege Card.

With this card, you’ll earn CIBC Aventura points per dollar spent on travel purchases through the CIBC Rewards Center, followed by points per dollar spent on dining, entertainment, gas, transportation, and groceries. Sure the point rates on groceries, dining, and travel aren’t as high as the BMO Rewards you can earn with the BMO eclipse Visa Infinite Privilege Card, but CIBC Aventura points are a bit more valuable than BMO Rewards points when redeemed towards travel.

The insurance provided on both cards is pretty similar, but the benefits differ beyond shared Visa Infinite Exclusive Benefits, a Dragon Pass membership with complimentary visits, and gas discounts. On top of these shared categories, the CIBC Aventura Visa Infinite Privilege Card adds car rental discounts at participating Avis and Budget locations, an annual travel credit that you can redeem through the CIBC Rewards Center, and a Nexus Program rebate. While these perks are valuable, they aren’t as extensive as the perks provided by the BMO eclipse Visa Infinite Privilege Card. In place of an official annual travel credit, the BMO eclipse Visa Infinite Privilege Card offers an annual anniversary credit, which technically can be used towards travel expenses. What might make the BMO eclipse Visa Infinite Privilege Card’s anniversary credit more appealing than the CIBC Aventura Visa Infinite Privilege Card’s annual travel credit is its flexibility. With the CIBC Aventura Visa Infinite Privilege Card’s annual travel credit, you have to redeem the money towards travel booked through the CIBC Rewards Center. On the other hand, with the BMO eclipse Visa Infinite Privilege Card’s flexible anniversary credit, you can apply the credit towards any booking made through any travel platform.

So, if you want higher-value travel-redeemable points paired with your premium perks like lounge access and an annual travel credit, then you’ll likely be intrigued by the CIBC Aventura Visa Infinite Privilege Card. However, if you want more BMO Rewards points, more travel benefits, and more travel optimization and credit flexibility, you might want to try out the BMO eclipse Visa Infinite Privilege Card instead.

If you travel a lot throughout the year with Air Canada, the benefits of this card can significantly enhance your experience. It can help you achieve the next status level with Aeroplan and provide a better airport experience, therefore it can be worth the price tag. However, if you don't frequently fly with Air Canada, the benefits may not justify the card's expensive price tag.

Pros

  • Premium experience for Elite Air Canada travelers with many benefits and status upgrades.
  • High coverage limit on insurance.
  • Numerous luxury benefits and statuses available for use.

Cons

  • The rewards rate on this card is not that high. There are non-Aeroplan cards with much better reward programs, and their points can later be transferred to this card, making them better options if you are looking to gather Aeroplan points.
  • You lose the flexibility to use other airlines if you want to take advantage of the benefits of this card.
  • The high price tag makes this card a poor choice if you don't frequently travel with Air Canada.
  • The unlimited lounge access is limited to Maple Leaf Lounges and Air Canada Cafe lounges which don't have a great worldwide coverage.

Rewards

  • 2 points on Air Canada and Air Canada Vacations if they are in the first $100k transactions of the year
  • 1.5 points on Gas, Groceries, Travel and Dining if they are in the first $100k transactions of the year
  • 1.25 Point on everything else

The most affordable premium credit card on the Canadian market is the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Privilege Card. That said, part of its affordability might come from the fact that it lacks any airport lounge access. Regardless, there are still plenty of perks to get excited about.

For such a lower annual fee, it’s almost surprising how the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Privilege Card’s perks surpass those of the CIBC Aventura Visa Infinite Privilege Card. While both cards grant cardholders car rental discounts at Avis and Budget Rent A Car (although lower discount rates with the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Privilege Card), Visa Infinite Exclusive Benefits, and a Nexus Program rebate, the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Privilege Card goes on to add trip and legal assistance, concierge services, the opportunity to reach Aeroplan Elite Status sooner with Status Qualifying Miles and a Status Qualifying Segment, free first checked bags for the cardholder and up to 8 travel companions, extra Aeroplan points and Stars at participating Starbucks stores, double the points at over 150 Aeroplan partner brands and more than 170 online retailers through the Aeroplan eStore, and finally, Troon Rewards Golf benefits. Still, some applicants might be hesitant to apply for this card since it doesn’t have any airport lounge access – like the CIBC Aventura Visa Infinite Privilege Card and others.

The coverage between the two cards is also quite similar, but in some shared travel categories like emergency medical insurances and trip interruption and trip cancellation insurance, the CIBC Aventura Visa Infinite Privilege Card has better coverage overall.

The CIBC Aventura Visa Infinite Privilege Card also has a stronger rewards program with better point rates on shared earn categories like gas, groceries, and travel, plus this card adds more earn opportunities through extra categories like dining, entertainment, and transportation.

CIBC Aventura points are also worth more than Air Canada Aeroplan points when redeemed towards travel later on.

Overall, the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Privilege Card is a solid premium travel card for frequent Air Canada travellers who are a bit more budget-conscious and have no problem swapping out airport lounge access for more perks like free first checked bags or extra Aeroplan point opportunities. However, the CIBC Aventura Visa Infinite Privilege Card is a bit more valuable when it comes to redeeming points towards travel and it has some complimentary airport lounge access – for a higher annual fee of course.

The TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite Card is an excellent option for frequent travelers who book through Expedia For TD and want to maximize rewards on travel purchases. The high welcome bonus and extensive insurance coverage make this card stand out. However, the high income requirements and limited value of TD points may not make it the best fit for everyone.

Pros

  • Generous welcome bonus of up to 135,000 points, which can be worth up to $675 in travel rewards.
  • Earn 8 points per $1 spent on travel booked through Expedia For TD, making it a great card for frequent travelers.
  • First year annual fee rebate, making it free for the first year.
  • Extensive insurance coverage, including trip cancellation, emergency medical, baggage delay, and more.
  • Annual $100 travel credit on a purchase of $500 or more through Expedia For TD.

Cons

  • High income requirements: You need to earn at least $60,000 personally or $100,000 as a household.
  • TD Rewards points are only worth 0.5 cents each, limiting their value compared to some other rewards programs.
  • The Expedia For TD platform might not always offer the best prices or availability compared to booking directly with airlines or hotels.

Rewards

  • 8x points per $1 spent on travel booked online through Expedia for TD
  • 6x points per $1 spent on eligible grocery and restaurant purchases
  • 4x points per $1 spent on eligible recurring bill payments

The TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite Card actually earns cardholders tons of TD Rewards points on travel booked online through Expedia for TD in the first place, which can later be redeemed towards Expedia For TD travel at the highest point-redemption rate. You can also earn generous points on eligible grocery and restaurant purchases, plus eligible recurring bill payments – all of which of course can be later redeemed towards Expedia For TD trips. To top everything off, the card also comes with an above-average base rate.

With the TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite Card, you’re also thoroughly covered with 13 different insurance types – most of which pertain to travel. These insurance categories include protections like trip interruption and trip cancellation insurance, flight and baggage delay, and emergency medical coverages.

For benefits, expect travel perks like concierge services, extra Aeroplan points on Starbucks runs, car rental discounts at Avis and Budget locations, plus an annual TD Travel Credit when you book specifically through Expedia For TD. There’s also an annual birthday bonus, which gifts you extra TD Rewards points that you can of course use towards your next Expedia For TD booking.

While there are other TD contenders that are linked to Expedia For TD travel, none of them are as comprehensive and rewarding as the TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite Card.

Best Aeroplan-Branded Travel Credit Cards

Of course, there are a few American Express Cards that earn plenty of points that can be transferred to Aeroplan at a 1:1 ratio (think the American Express Cobalt Card and the American Express Gold Rewards Card), these cards are great options if you don’t need any accompanying Air Canada perks and want more travel flexibility overall.

In this category, however, we’re going to be focusing on the top Aeroplan-branded travel credit cards that come with strong Aeroplan reward programs and affiliated benefits.

Even the base rate on all other purchases is a bit above average.

With this card, you’ll also have substantial insurance coverage, with important inclusions like trip cancellation and trip interruption insurance, not to mention emergency out of province medical insurance.

The benefits on this card are seemingly endless, with perks like free first checked bags, a NEXUS Program rebate, multiple status lifts, Priority Travel perks, airport lounge passes and access, the companion voucher, and a free extra night on eligible hotel stays.

This card comes with the free checked bag benefit, which can save hundreds on a single trip for you and your family, more than making up for the annual fee of the card. In addition, the card helps you reach the next Aeroplan Status faster with spending on the card. However, if you don't have a specific use for these two benefits, there are many better cards in terms of benefits and rewards.

Pros

  • Free checked bag benefit: Every checked bag might cost you $60 - $100 per person on a round trip. The amount you can save in a year if you travel a few times or travel with a few companions can easily be much higher than the annual fee of the card.
  • If you are interested in a higher Aeroplan Status, the card helps you get there faster.

Cons

  • The main reward category is only for Air Canada purchases. Unless you are a frequent Air Canada traveler, this reward category is not useful to most people.
  • The only other rewards category offered is for food, and it doesn't offer that high of a reward rate either.
  • In terms of insurance benefits, the types and coverage amounts provided are lower compared to other cards with a similar annual fee.

Rewards*

If you want an Aeroplan-branded credit card that’s similar to the American Express Aeroplan Reserve Card but much more affordable, consider the American Express Aeroplan Card.

With this option, you’ll earn almost as many Aeroplan points on Air Canada and Air Canada Vacations purchases, plus nearly as many points on eligible dining and food delivery purchases. Instead of having an above average base rate of Aeroplan points on all other purchases (like the American Express Aeroplan Reserve Card), the American Express Aeroplan Card has a standard base rate on everything else.

Among the two cards’ shared insurance categories, certain categories have better coverage on the American Express Aeroplan Reserve Card, like hotel burglary insurance, baggage delay insurance, and flight delay insurance. The American Express Aeroplan Reserve Card also adds lost or stolen baggage insurance, emergency out of province medical insurance, and trip interruption and trip cancellation insurance to its protections, unlike the American Express Aeroplan Card.

While the American Express Aeroplan Card also has benefits like the expedited chance of reaching Aeroplan Elite Status, free first checked bags, extra Aeroplan points through partnered brands, a free extra night on Aeroplan-point-purchased 3-night hotel stays, and Amex experiences, the American Express Aeroplan Reserve Card adds way more premium benefits like an annual companion voucher, Priority Travel perks, and unlimited airport lounge access to Maple Leaf Lounges and Air Canada Cafes.

Thus, you’d likely only pick the American Express Aeroplan Card over the American Express Aeroplan Reserve Card if you wanted to spend less annually in exchange for fewer Aeroplan points on optimized earn categories, insurance categories, and travel perks.

The TD® Aeroplan® Visa Infinite Card* is an excellent choice for frequent Air Canada travelers looking to maximize their rewards with Aeroplan points. With perks like free checked bags, Preferred Pricing, and a first-year fee waiver, it’s ideal for users who value Air Canada-specific benefits. However, the card’s high income requirement and limited non-Air Canada redemption options may not appeal to everyone.

Pros

  • Earn up to 40,000 Aeroplan points (welcome bonus offer ends January 6, 2025).
  • 1.5 points per $1 on gas, groceries, and Air Canada purchases.
  • Free checked bags and Preferred Pricing on Air Canada rewards flights.
  • Extensive insurance coverage with 12 types of insurance.

Rewards

  • 1.5x Aeroplan points per $1 spent on gas, groceries, Air Canada and Air Canada vacations (maximum 120,000 points annually)
  • 1x Aeroplan point per $1 spent on all other eligible purchases

Let’s say you want to avoid American Express, but still pocket a solid Aeroplan-branded credit card. In this case, you’ll want to look at the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card, a card that we consider to be the best overall Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card in terms of price, rewards, and perks.

In all honesty, the rewards program on this Aeroplan card is less impressive, but you’ll earn a decent amount of Aeroplan points per dollar spent on gas, groceries, and Air Canada purchases. This conveniently optimizes your most common day-to-day errands and any Air Canada trips you intend on taking. It’s worth noting though that contrary to the American Express Aeroplan Card, you’ll be earning slightly less Aeroplan points on Air Canada purchases.

The TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card is also a little more expensive annually than the American Express Aeroplan Card. But the good news is that the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card’s annual fee is completely waived in the first year of membership.

The TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card also has annual income requirements, whereas the American Express Aeroplan Card has none.

Still, you’ll have more insurance with the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card, as it adds valuable protections that the American Express Aeroplan Card lacks, like trip interruption and trip cancellation insurance, emergency medical coverages, and lost or stolen baggage insurance.

The TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card also has more benefits like car rental discounts at Avis and Budget locations, a Nexus Program rebate, trip and legal assistance, and concierge services. While its perks are indeed extensive, they’re not as premium as the American Express Aeroplan Reserve Card, since they lack lounge access.

Overall, the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card is the best overall Aeroplan-branded option in terms of balanced rewards, perks, and coverage at a reasonable price-point. If you can spend some more money though and you’d like to earn slightly more Aeroplan points on Air Canada travel, look into the American Express Aeroplan Card, or if you’re a high-spender who wants the most Aeroplan points on shared earn categories and the most premium perks, try the American Express Aeroplan Reserve Card.

For a decent annual fee that’s waived in the first year, cardholders receive strong Miles points per $12 spent at participating AIR MILES Partners, plus decent Miles points per $12 spent on eligible grocery, liquor, and wholesale store purchases.

To complement this rewards program, the card includes plenty of travel insurance. Expect protections like trip interruption and trip cancellation insurance, flight and baggage delay insurance, and emergency out of province medical insurance.

As for benefits, enjoy a Dragon Pass membership (excluding complimentary visits), discounts on Shell fuel, National, Enterprise, and Alamo rental cars, Booking.com prepaid hotels and rental property bookings, and one worldwide AIR Miles flight redemption, plus an Automatic Air Miles Onyx status lift.

You will want to note, however, that the BMO AIR MILES World Elite Mastercard comes with some high annual income requirements, which might make it less accessible for some applicants.

Therefore, if you’re a high-earner who wants the best Air Miles earn rates, accompanied by solid coverage and tons of discounts and a couple of exclusive memberships and statuses – check out the BMO AIR MILES World Elite Mastercard.

The BMO Air Miles Mastercard is an excellent option for those looking to collect Air Miles without paying an annual fee. With bonus earning opportunities at Air Miles partners and grocery stores, this card is ideal for regular Air Miles collectors. It also offers perks like fuel savings at Shell and a competitive balance transfer rate, making it a versatile card for everyday purchases. However, its limited rewards outside of partner stores may not make it the best fit for those who don't frequently shop at Air Miles-affiliated retailers.

Pros

  • No annual fee: The card is free to hold, making it a cost-effective way to collect Air Miles.
  • Bonus miles at partners: Earn 3x the miles at Air Miles partners and 2x the miles at grocery, liquor, and wholesale stores.
  • Fuel savings: Save up to 7 cents per litre at Shell stations, with the potential to save up to $100 annually.
  • Balance transfer offer: 0.99% promotional interest rate on balance transfers for the first 9 months.

Cons

  • Low base earn rate: Earn only 1 Air Mile per $25 spent on all non-bonus purchases.
  • Limited insurance: The card only offers basic insurance, such as extended warranty and purchase protection.
  • Limited value outside Air Miles partners: Rewards earning potential is higher at participating partners, but significantly lower for general spending.

Rewards*

  • 3x Miles points per $25 spent at participating AIR MILES Partners

Let’s say you want a similar Air Miles rewards program and some similar perks for no annual fee. In that case, swap the BMO AIR MILES World Elite Mastercard for the BMO AIR MILES Mastercard.

With this card, you’ll earn the same Miles points rates on AIR MILES Partners and groceries as the BMO AIR MILES World Elite Mastercard, but you’ll need to spend about double the amount of money to receive the points.

As for coverage, unfortunately, the BMO AIR MILES Mastercard only has basic extended warranty insurance and purchase protection insurance, whereas the BMO AIR MILES World Elite Mastercard goes on to add multiple travel protections.

In terms of coverage, the BMO AIR MILES Mastercard offers the same car rental discount at National Car Rental, Alamo Rent a Car, and Enterprise Rent A Car, discounts on Shell fuel, and discounts on Booking.com prepaid hotel and rental property bookings. Uniquely though, the BMO AIR MILES Mastercard adds a Cirque du Soleil discount on shows touring in Canada and Las Vegas.

Thankfully, the BMO AIR MILES Mastercard doesn’t have any income requirements, like the BMO AIR MILES World Elite Mastercard.

All in all, the BMO AIR MILES Mastercard is a great substitute to the BMO AIR MILES World Elite Mastercard if you don’t meet the BMO AIR MILES World Elite Mastercard’s high income requirements and you want to avoid an annual fee altogether.

The BMO AIR MILES Mastercard for Students is nearly identical to the BMO AIR MILES Mastercard.

If you travel frequently with WestJet, you must get this card because you are missing out on many benefits, even if you don't use this card for rewards. The round-trip companion voucher, status lift, and free checked bag benefits alone more than make up for the annual fee. For WestJet purchases, this card is great for earning rewards, but for all other categories, we recommend pairing it with another card.

Pros

  • A no-brainer if you are a frequent WestJet traveler. The first free checked bag, annual companion pass, and status lift benefits alone make up more than the amount paid for the annual fee.
  • A very good list of travel insurance in addition to WestJet-specific benefits.

Cons

  • Not the best card for rewards accumulation, so it's better if paired with another card that offers higher rewards on non-WestJet purchases.
  • Rewards can only be used on WestJet, making them less flexible.

The WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard is ideal for those who frequently travel with WestJet on account of its rewards program, but more importantly, its benefits.

For rewards, cardholders earn cashback in WestJet dollars on WestJet flights and vacation packages, plus a higher-than-average base rate in WestJest dollars on all other purchases.

Like we said though, the perks on this card are particularly enticing. For starters, there’s the annual companion voucher. This voucher is awarded to cardholders each year automatically and is applicable towards eligible roundtrip flights within the WestJet network – just mind the additional charges and fees still associated with this perk depending on the planned destination and fare-type. Other benefits include a free Dragon Pass membership (which can actually come with some complimentary visits if you trade-in the companion voucher), WestJet Rewards tier status lifts, free first checked bags for the cardholder and 8 travel companions, discounts on full base fares when paid for by WestJet dollars, access to the Boingo Wi-Fi hotspot, gas discounts and extra points at Petro Canada, plus extra points on eligible Rexall purchases.

The coverage on the WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard is also respectable, with sought-after categories like trip interruption insurance and emergency medical over 65 insurance.

Ultimately, if WestJet is your airline of choice and you want some associated perks that will make your trip that much more convenient and memorable, there’s really no better card for you than the WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard.

The RBC British Airways Visa Infinite is ideal for frequent international travelers who primarily fly with British Airways or oneworld alliance partners. The welcome bonus, Companion Voucher, and triple Avios earning potential on British Airways purchases make it valuable for high spenders. However, it may not be ideal for those looking for more flexibility in redeeming rewards or those who prioritize domestic travel.

Pros

  • Generous welcome bonus: Up to 60,000 Avios can translate to $1070 in travel value.
  • Triple Avios on British Airways flights, making it ideal for frequent travelers.
  • 10% discount on British Airways flights.
  • Companion Award eVoucher: Great value for frequent British Airways flyers.
  • 9 types of insurance included, such as travel accident, flight delay, and rental car insurance.
  • 3 cents per litre savings at Petro-Canada with linked cards.

Cons

  • High income requirements: Must have either $60,000 personal or $100,000 household income to qualify.
  • Limited flexibility: Avios can only be used with British Airways and oneworld alliance airlines, limiting options for domestic or non-alliance travel.
  • Companion Voucher requires $30,000 in annual spending, which may not be accessible for all cardholders.

Rewards

As for benefits, the RBC British Airways Visa Infinite Card includes a companion voucher when you meet a certain spending milestone within a calendar year, discounts off of British Airways flights, and gas discounts at Petro Canada, plus extra Petro Points.

If you’re looking for a card that’s business-focused but more affordable, take a look at the American Express Business Gold Rewards Card instead – it’s truly a fraction of the annual cost of the American Express Business Platinum Card!

Like the American Express Business Platinum Card, the American Express Business Gold Rewards Card has a flat-rate rewards program.

Sure, the insurance on this card isn’t as extensive or impressive as the insurance on the American Express Business Platinum Card – but that’s to be expected on a card with a lower annual fee!

In terms of benefits, the American Express Business Gold Rewards Card has fewer perks than the American Express Business Platinum Card, but it still provides cardholders with a travel credit earned through consecutive bookings made through participating hotel partners, and bonus points each quarter when you charge a specific amount in net purchases to the card.

So, if you don’t want to splurge on the American Express Business Platinum Card, the American Express Business Gold Rewards Card is a great alternative for business travel.

The Marriott Bonvoy® Business American Express® Card offers strong rewards, especially for frequent travelers who stay at Marriott properties, with the ability to earn 5 points per $1 spent and a generous welcome bonus. Additionally, the annual free night certificate and automatic Silver Elite status add value for business owners. However, the $150 annual fee and the lower acceptance rate of American Express might be drawbacks for some users, particularly those who don't travel frequently or prefer more widely accepted cards.

Pros

  • High Welcome Bonus: Earn up to 60,000 points, which can be highly valuable when redeemed for hotel stays or transferred to airline partners.
  • Strong Rewards at Marriott Properties: Earn 5 points per $1 spent at Marriott properties, and 3 points per $1 on gas, dining, and travel.
  • Annual Free Night Certificate: Receive a certificate worth 35,000 points annually.
  • Automatic Silver Elite Status: Enjoy perks like late checkout and room upgrades at Marriott hotels.

Cons

If you happen to frequently check-in to Marriott properties on business trips, then the Marriott Bonvoy Business American Express Card sounds like your kind of card.

Contrary to its above competitors, this card offers specialized categories to earn points rather than a flat-rate rewards program. With the Marriott Bonvoy Business American Express Card, you’ll receive points per dollar spent on eligible purchases made at participating Marriott Bonvoy hotels, points per dollar spent on gas, dining and travel purchases, plus a higher-than-average base rate on all other purchases.

The insurance coverage on this card matches the insurance on the American Express Business Gold Rewards Card.

Also compared to the American Express Business Gold Rewards Card, the Marriott Bonvoy Business American Express Card has fewer benefits. Still, cardholders get valuable perks like the chance to earn Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite Status when they meet certain spending requirements and combine their Elite Night Credits, plus free extra nights at Marriott hotels annually.

Therefore, the Marriott Bonvoy Business American Express Card is perfect for business travellers who want to spend the least annually on a business travel card, and those who constantly stay at Marriott Bonvoy hotels specifically.

Unfortunately, the card comes with no travel insurance – just your basic purchase protection and extended warranty insurance.

As for benefits, you’ll get standard Amex Experiences and extra points on Amex Travel Online purchases.

This card is one of the best in Canada, especially if you are a Rogers, Fido, or Shaw customer. With those services, you can effectively get a 3% cashback rate, which is higher than what almost any other card offers, even those with annual fees! Additionally, for a no-fee card, you gain access to an extensive list of travel benefits, many of which are typically offered only with cards that have annual fees. Therefore, we recommend this card to anyone who meets the income requirements, even if you are not a Rogers customer!

Pros

  • Voted the Best Cash Back Card in Canada for Rogers, Fido and Shaw customers by FinlyWealth.
  • Voted the Best No Annual Fee Credit Card in Canada by FinlyWealth.
  • There is no annual fee which is a notable benefit for a card with such high rewards. Most cards with slightly lower reward rates typically include yearly fees.
  • Many favorable benefits for travelers.
  • Many benefits, such as trip cancellation insurance, are only available on credit cards with an annual fee. It is rare to see these benefits on a no-annual-fee card!
  • Offers the flexibility to redeem cash towards Rogers, Shaw, or Fido services, potentially increasing your rewards.
  • The roam-like benefit is a benefit unique only to this card.
  • It is accepted at nearly all locations as it's a Mastercard.

Cons

  • Harder to qualify due to the high credit score and income requirements.
  • Out of all possible travel insurances, this card is missing Baggage delay and Hotel Burglary insurance. If these two insurances are essential to someone, this card needs to be paired with another travel card to cover them.

Rewards*

  • Earn 3% unlimited cash back on all eligible purchases made in U.S. dollars.^
  • Earn 2% unlimited cash back on all eligible non-U.S. dollar purchases if you have 1 qualifying service with Rogers, Fido or Shaw.^

While the Rogers Red World Elite Mastercard doesn’t have a travel-specific rewards or redemption program, it does come with some impressive travel insurance and perks for a no-fee credit card.

Instead of earning you points that can later be redeemed towards travel (like the American Express Green Card), the Rogers Red World Elite Mastercard earns you cashback on all U.S dollar purchases, plus nice cashback on all regular purchases if you have a qualifying Rogers, Fido, or Shaw service account – otherwise the rate is a bit lower. You can also receive a redemption bonus on your earned cashback when you use your cashback towards Rogers, Fido, and Shaw purchases.

As mentioned, the real draw of the Rogers Red World Elite Mastercard for travellers that want to avoid annual fees is the card’s travel coverage and perks. For travel coverage, expect valuable inclusions like car rental damage and theft insurance, emergency out of province medical insurance, emergency medical over 65 insurance, plus trip interruption and trip cancellation insurance – which is all very rare to be featured on a no-fee credit card!

For benefits, you’ll find a Dragon Pass membership (without complimentary visits) and no cost roaming – two perks that cater to casual travellers.

Unfortunately, the Rogers Red World Elite Mastercard comes with some high income requirements. So while cardholders may be budget-conscious, they’re also high-earners.

All in all, the Rogers Red World Elite Mastercard is a solid option for high-earning casual travellers that want to save on annual fees and still earn impressive travel coverage and benefits.
