The TD® Aeroplan® Visa Infinite Card* is an excellent choice for frequent Air Canada travelers looking to maximize their rewards with Aeroplan points. With perks like free checked bags, Preferred Pricing, and a first-year fee waiver, it’s ideal for users who value Air Canada-specific benefits. However, the card’s high income requirement and limited non-Air Canada redemption options may not appeal to everyone.

Pros

  • Earn up to 40,000 Aeroplan points (welcome bonus offer ends January 6, 2025).
  • 1.5 points per $1 on gas, groceries, and Air Canada purchases.
  • Free checked bags and Preferred Pricing on Air Canada rewards flights.
  • Extensive insurance coverage with 12 types of insurance.

Cons

  • The rewards rate on this card is not that high. There are non-Aeroplan cards with much better reward programs, and their points can later be transferred to this card, making them better options if you are looking to gather Aeroplan points.
  • You lose the flexibility to use other airlines if you want to take advantage of the benefits of this card.

Rewards

The best overall Aeroplan Credit Card comes from TD. The TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card is a well-rounded Aeroplan co-branded credit card that gives cardholders solid Aeroplan points on popular everyday categories like gas and groceries, plus Air Canada purchases.

This Aeroplan card also boasts valuable benefits like free first checked bags, a NEXUS Program rebate, and an expedited chance at earning Aeroplan Elite Status.

The coverage is also extensive, with protections like trip interruption and cancellation insurance, not to mention emergency medical over 65 coverage.

Another perk? You'll get all of these amazing offerings for a reasonable annual fee that can certainly be offset in annual value if you take advantage of all the add-ons.

Out of all the credit cards on this list, you'll find that the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card blends great rewards, comprehensive coverage, and important benefits at good price point.

Lets start with the American Express Green Card. While this credit card isn't directly Aeroplan-affiliated, it still earns you a decent point per dollar spent rewards program on all purchases. Technically, the points you earn are American Express Membership Rewards points, but these points can be transferred at a 1:1 ratio to Aeroplan points.

You can top off these transferrable points with protections like extended warranty and purchase protection insurance, plus benefits like extra points on Amex Travel Online purchases and Amex Experiences.

For no annual fee, we must admit, you get a pretty good deal on Aeroplan-transferrable rewards and a couple of coverage categories and perks.

The CIBC Aeroplan Visa Card is an excellent no-fee option for Aeroplan members who want to earn miles without an annual fee. Its solid earn rates on essential categories like gas and groceries make it easy to accumulate points quickly. The card also offers Preferred Pricing on Aeroplan redemptions, giving cardholders more value when they book flights with Air Canada. For someone looking for an entry-level Aeroplan card, this is a strong choice, especially with its generous welcome bonus.

Pros

  • No Annual Fee: Enjoy Aeroplan rewards with no cost to maintain the card.
  • Solid Rewards on Key Categories: Earn 1 Aeroplan point per $1 on gas, groceries, EV charging, and Air Canada purchases.
  • Preferred Pricing on Aeroplan Rewards: Get access to better redemption rates on Aeroplan flight rewards.

Cons

  • Limited Reward Rate: Only earns 1 point per $1.50 on all other purchases, which is less competitive than some other no-fee cards.
  • Best Value for Air Canada Flyers: Maximum redemption value is through Air Canada flights, which limits flexibility if you don’t frequently fly with Air Canada.

Rewards

  • 1 Aeroplan® point per $1 spent on eligible gas, electric vehicle charging, groceries and with Air Canada directly, including through Air Canada Vacations®
  • 1 Aeroplan® point per $1.50 spent (0.66 point per $1) on all other purchases

While this no-fee card only grants you one Aeroplan point for every dollar spent on gas, electric vehicle charging, groceries, and Air Canada purchases, plus limited coverage and benefits, it’s still a great option if you’re more budget-conscious but still looking to collect points with Aeroplan.

Unlike the American Express Green Card, the CIBC Aeroplan Visa Card is directly linked to Aeroplan and adds car rental damage and theft and travel accident insurance to its coverage list on top of extended warranty and purchase protection insurance.

As for benefits, the CIBC Aeroplan Visa Card can earn you extra Aeroplan points on partnered brands and online retailers through the Aeroplan eStore, plus flight rewards for fewer points.

To apply for this card, you will need to meet a household income requirement (but it's very minimal), whereas with the American Express Green Card, there are no income requirements whatsoever.

You might opt for the CIBC Aeroplan Visa Card over the American Express Green Card if you prefer to collect Aeroplan points directly, if you want to avoid Amex's lower acceptance rate (typically within Europe), and if you want a couple more insurance coverages.

While this credit card isn’t directly earn you Aeroplan points, that doesn’t stop it from having an amazing 1:1 point transfer ratio to Air Canada Aeroplan, meaning you can convert every 1 American Express point to 1 Aeroplan point with the transfer.

This top-tier alternative to Aeroplan branded credit cards is the American Express Cobalt Card – which is also often considered to be the best credit card in Canada on account of its balanced rewards, perks, and coverage.

To earn Aeroplan transferable points with the Cobalt Card, you can collect American Express Membership Reward points on every dollar you spend on eligible eats and drinks in Canada, including groceries and food deliveries (capped each month). Likewise, you can earn points per dollar spent on eligible Canadian streaming subscriptions, gas, and transit.

Needless to say, these reward rates are some of the highest you’ll see and can be easily converted from American Express Membership Rewards points to Aeroplan points, allowing you to technically accumulate the most Aeroplan points on some top spending categories.

As mentioned, American Express Membership Rewards can be transferred at a 1:1 ratio to Aeroplan points. To make this transfer, you need to login to your Amex account and input the amount of American Express Membership Rewards points you’d like to transfer to Aeroplan. The minimum transfer amount is listed as 1000 points.

On top of the high earning potential, this card also offers good coverage and perks for a reasonable annual fee – all of which contribute to an impressive yearly value.

Another Amex credit card that allows you to transfer American Express Membership Rewards to Aeroplan at a 1:1 ratio is the American Express Gold Rewards Card.

Starting with points, the American Express Gold Rewards Card offers points per dollar spent on gas, groceries, and drugstore purchases, plus points per dollar spent on travel. While the Cobalt Card doesn’t have a specialized category for travel or drugstore purchases, it does offer tons of points on dining, groceries and food delivery, plus solid points on streaming subscriptions, and similar points on gas with the addition of a transit category.

Compared to the Cobalt Card, the American Express Gold Rewards Card is a bit more expensive, but its higher annual cost accounts for more perks.

In terms of coverage, the American Express Gold Rewards Card adds some more valuable categories to the mix like valuable trip interruption and trip cancellation insurance. As for any shared pre-existing categories, the American Express Gold Rewards Card sometimes adds more value, specifically for travel accident insurance.

Both cards come with an annual travel credit and American Express Experiences, but the American Express Gold Rewards Card goes on to add perks like status lifts, a NEXUS Program rebate, complimentary hotel benefits, and an airport lounge pass along with some complimentary visits.

So, if you want more coverage and benefits to accompany your Aeroplan credit card, then the American Express Gold Rewards Card is a better fit – as long as you don’t mind paying a little extra for it. Alternatively, the Cobalt Card is better for points and is reasonably priced if you don’t need all the frills of the American Express Gold Rewards Card. The Cobalt Card also earns you much more in annual value overall.

Best Co-Branded Aeroplan Credit Cards

In all fairness, we also need to focus on co-branded Aeroplan Credit Cards. These cards earn Aeroplan points directly through their reward programs and are provided by institutions like CIBC, TD, and American Express.

To make this section a little easier to digest, we’ll devote a sub-category to each institution.

Starting with the top CIBC Aeroplan point earner, the CIBC Aeroplan Visa Infinite Privilege Card earns cardholders Aeroplan points per dollar spent on Air Canada and Air Canada vacations, if the purchases are made within a specified spending cap each year. You’ll also earn points per dollar spent on gas, groceries, transit, and dining.

The travel insurance is also extensive, which is to be expected from a Visa Infinite Privilege Card. The card includes valuable coverage categories like emergency medical over 65, plus trip interruption and trip cancellation insurance.

As for benefits, you’ll also have a nice spread of travel perks. Everything from airport lounge access at select Maple Leaf Lounges and Air Canada Cafes to status lifts towards Aeroplan Elite Status and the Avis President’s Club, plus free first checked bags for you and 8 travel companions.

However, to get your hands on this premium Aeroplan card, you’ll need to earn a high personal and household annual income. You’ll also want to make sure you budget for the card’s rather large annual fee.

Cons

  • Income Requirements: Requires either a $60,000 personal income or a $100,000 household income to qualify.

The next best CIBC Aeroplan point earner is the CIBC Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card. This Visa card allows you to collect decent points per dollar spent on eligible gas, electric vehicle charges, groceries, and Air Canada purchases. When compared to the CIBC Aeroplan Visa Infinite Privilege Card, the rewards on Air Canada purchases aren’t quite as high, but it matches the point rates on gas and groceries. That said, the CIBC Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card doesn’t include valuable earn categories like travel and dining (like the CIBC Aeroplan Visa Infinite Privilege Card).

When you compare the two CIBC cards’ coverage, they cover the same categories, but the CIBC Aeroplan Visa Infinite Privilege Card provides more value to most insurance types.

While the two cards share perks like Aeroplan status lifts, car rental discounts, and free first checked bags, the CIBC Aeroplan Visa Infinite Privilege Card has slightly more benefits than the CIBC Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card, including airport lounge access, priority check-in, and a companion voucher. Still, the CIBC Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card includes an extra discount on flights, and a free extra night at participating hotels when your stay is paid for by Aeroplan points.

Really, it makes sense that the CIBC Aeroplan Visa Infinite Privilege Card offers more overall than the CIBC Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card, because the CIBC Aeroplan Visa Infinite Privilege Card costs more money annually and requires a higher annual income. In contrast, the CIBC Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card is available for a fraction of the CIBC Aeroplan Visa Infinite Privilege Card’s annual fee, and this fee is also waived in the first year of membership.

So, if you can’t quite meet the income requirements of the CIBC Aeroplan Visa Infinite Privilege Card or pay it’s steep annual fee, the CIBC Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card is a great alternative that still earns you solid Aeroplan points on everyday and travel-oriented categories, extensive coverage, and helpful benefits.

The final CIBC Aeroplan credit card in this category stands out because it has no annual fee and still earns you an Aeroplan point per dollar spent on eligible gas, electric vehicle charging, groceries, and Air Canada purchases. This card is none other than the CIBC Aeroplan Visa Card.

Since there’s no annual fee affiliated with the card, you will notice fewer coverage categories and benefits. For insurance, you’ll only be covered under travel accident, purchase protection, extended warranty, and car rental damage and theft protections. Regarding benefits, you’ll receive a discount on flight rewards and extra points on purchases made at over 150 Aeroplan partner brands and over 170 online retailers through the Aeroplan eStore.

At the end of the day, if you’re looking for an affordable card with low income requirements (especially when compared to both the CIBC Aeroplan Visa Infinite Privilege Card and the CIBC Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card), and you still want to earn some Aeroplan points on everyday and travel categories, then the CIBC Aeroplan Visa Card could be a good choice.

If you travel a lot throughout the year with Air Canada, the benefits of this card can significantly enhance your experience. It can help you achieve the next status level with Aeroplan and provide a better airport experience, therefore it can be worth the price tag. However, if you don't frequently fly with Air Canada, the benefits may not justify the card's expensive price tag.

Pros

  • Premium experience for Elite Air Canada travelers with many benefits and status upgrades.
  • High coverage limit on insurance.
  • Numerous luxury benefits and statuses available for use.

  • The high price tag makes this card a poor choice if you don't frequently travel with Air Canada.
  • The unlimited lounge access is limited to Maple Leaf Lounges and Air Canada Cafe lounges which don't have a great worldwide coverage.

Rewards

  • 2 points on Air Canada and Air Canada Vacations if they are in the first $100k transactions of the year
  • 1.5 points on Gas, Groceries, Travel and Dining if they are in the first $100k transactions of the year

Beginning again with the Aeroplan credit card that earns cardholders the most Aeroplan points in this particular category, the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Privilege Card could be your top contender.

Earn points per dollar spent on Air Canada purchases (including Air Canada Vacations), plus points on gas, groceries, travel, and dining.

Like other Visa Infinite Privilege Cards, the insurance coverage is comprehensive and includes sought-after categories like emergency medical over 65, trip cancellation, and trip interruption insurance.

On this particular card, the list of benefits is quite long, boasting perks like free first checked bags, a NEXUS Program rebate, airport lounge access, status lifts, and a companion voucher.

Of course, seeing as this is another premium card, the annual cost is high and so are the annual income requirements.

All in all, if you’re looking for a luxurious Aeroplan credit card with tons of travel perks, coverage, and rewards, but also some rewards to satisfy day-to-day spending, then the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Privilege Card could be the card for you.

For a much lower annual fee, you can swap your TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Privilege Card for the more affordable TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card.

With the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card, you’ll earn the same Aeroplan points rate on gas and groceries, but the amount of points you earn on Air Canada purchases will be slightly lower than the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Privilege Card.

As you might’ve guessed, the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Privilege Card has more comprehensive coverage than the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card as well as more benefits. That said, you can still get awesome status lifts, discounts, and free first checked bags with the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card.

Whether you choose the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card or the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Privilege Card will ultimately come down to how much you earn in a year and whether you’re willing to pay more for better coverage, more benefits, and slightly more Aeroplan points on Air Canada Travel.

The TD® Aeroplan® Visa Platinum Card* is a solid option for individuals who frequently fly with Air Canada and want a low-fee entry into the Aeroplan rewards program. With a first-year fee waiver, 20,000-point welcome bonus, and 12 types of insurance, it offers good value for occasional travelers. However, if you want broader reward options or higher earnings on non-Air Canada purchases, it may not be the best fit.

Pros

  • Up to 20,000 Aeroplan Points welcome bonus.
  • Earn 1 point per $1 on gas, groceries, and Air Canada purchases.
  • Preferred Pricing on Aeroplan flight rewards.
  • Includes 12 types of insurance for added travel protection.

There’s one more TD Aeroplan credit card worth mentioning in this category, the TD Aeroplan Visa Platinum Credit Card.

For the lowest annual fee of the three in this section, the TD Aeroplan Visa Platinum Credit Card earns you the same Aeroplan points per dollar spent on gas, groceries, and Air Canada purchases as the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card, but it sports a lower-than-average base rate on all other eligible purchases.

With the TD Aeroplan Visa Platinum Credit Card, you’ll also lose out on nearly half of the insurance categories offered by the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card, including valuable protections like emergency medical over 65 and trip interruption and trip cancellation insurance.

Unlike the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card, the TD Aeroplan Visa Platinum Credit Card only offers a car rental discount, extra Aeroplan points at participating Starbucks stores, and double the Aeroplan points at partner brands and Aeroplan eStore retailers.

The good news about the TD Aeroplan Visa Platinum Credit Card is that it has no income requirements, as opposed to what we’ve seen with both the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card and the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Privilege Card.

Therefore, you’ll probably pick the TD Aeroplan Visa Platinum Credit Card over the other two in this category if you’re looking for the most budget-friendly TD co-branded Aeroplan credit card.

If you are a frequent Air Canada traveler, having an Aeroplan card for perks like free checked bags and priority service can be very beneficial. Many financial institutions offer Aeroplan cards, but I don't believe the American Express version is the best one. Opting for another option might be better. However, the Amex card does have a very large sign-up bonus, making it a great choice for those specifically seeking that.

Pros

  • Generous rewards rate with up to 3 Aeroplan points per $1 spent on purchases, particularly beneficial for frequent flyers.
  • Enjoy free checked bags when flying with Air Canada, reducing travel costs.
  • Access to preferred pricing on Aeroplan flight awards, maximizing the value of your points.
  • Unlimited access to Maple Leaf lounges when flying with Air Canada, providing a more comfortable travel experience.
  • Extensive insurance coverage, including 11 types of insurance, offering peace of mind during your travels.

Cons

  • As an American Express card, it may have limited acceptance compared to other credit cards, potentially limiting its use in some places.
  • The most valuable rewards are generally tied to Air Canada flights, which may not appeal to travelers who fly with other airlines.
  • The card comes with a high annual fee of $599, which may be a consideration for budget-conscious users.
  • The unlimited lounge access is limited to Maple Leaf Lounges and Air Canada Cafe lounges which don't have a great worldwide coverage.

Rewards*

  • 3x Aeroplan® points per $1 spent on eligible Air Canada® and Air Canada Vacations® purchases

American Express offers its own share of Aeroplan-affiliated credit cards. The first one we’ll look at is the American Express Aeroplan Reserve Card.

This card earns cardholders Aeroplan points per dollar spent on eligible Air Canada and Air Canada Vacations purchases, followed by Aeroplan points per dollar spent on eligible dining and food delivery purchases. It also has a higher-than-usual base rate on all other purchases.

With the American Express Aeroplan Reserve Card, you’ll pair competitive Aeroplan rewards with comprehensive insurance categories, including trip interruption and trip cancellation insurance.

Cardholders will also gain several benefits, like free first checked bags, a NEXUS Program rebate, status lifts, priority travel perks, airport lounge passes and access, the companion voucher, and a free extra night on eligible hotel stays.

Thankfully, there are no income requirements to apply for this card, but you’ll need to be willing to pay a high annual fee.

If you’re looking for an Amex credit card that earns you Aeroplan points directly, the American Express Aeroplan Reserve Card will get you the most Aeroplan points under this institution, plus some great coverage and benefits.

This card comes with the free checked bag benefit, which can save hundreds on a single trip for you and your family, more than making up for the annual fee of the card. In addition, the card helps you reach the next Aeroplan Status faster with spending on the card. However, if you don't have a specific use for these two benefits, there are many better cards in terms of benefits and rewards.

Pros

  • Free checked bag benefit: Every checked bag might cost you $60 - $100 per person on a round trip. The amount you can save in a year if you travel a few times or travel with a few companions can easily be much higher than the annual fee of the card.
  • If you are interested in a higher Aeroplan Status, the card helps you get there faster.

Cons

  • The main reward category is only for Air Canada purchases. Unless you are a frequent Air Canada traveler, this reward category is not useful to most people.
  • The only other rewards category offered is for food, and it doesn't offer that high of a reward rate either.
  • In terms of insurance benefits, the types and coverage amounts provided are lower compared to other cards with a similar annual fee.

Rewards*

  • 2x Aeroplan® points on eligible purchases made directly with Air Canada®* and Air Canada vacations®*
  • 1.5x Aeroplan® points on eligible Dining and Food Delivery purchases in Canada
  • 1x Aeroplan® point on everything else

Compared to the American Express Aeroplan Reserve Card, the American Express Aeroplan Card is cheaper and less elaborate.

You’ll earn slightly less points per dollar on Air Canada purchases, plus fewer points on dining and food delivery purchases – but that’s to be expected with a less valuable card.

Similarly, your insurance coverage won’t be as comprehensive or extensive, offering 7 coverages instead of 11.

Like the American Express Aeroplan Reserve Card, the American Express Aeroplan Card offers members an expedited Aeroplan Elite Status lift, free first checked bags, extra points at Aeroplan partners, a free extra night on eligible hotel stays, and the standard Amex Experiences.

The clear distinction between the two cards is a correlation between annual fee and overall perks. So, if you meet the high income requirements and don’t mind spending more for more coverage, rewards, and perks, then the American Express Aeroplan Reserve Card is superior to the American Express Aeroplan Card. Otherwise, if you don’t meet the high income requirements or you don’t want to spend more for perks you don’t necessarily need, then the American Express Aeroplan Card will do just fine.
